Old Tree Yard · Curated supply

The Old Tree Barn.

A carefully chosen collection of bonsai tools, soil components, fertilisers and workshop essentials — selected with patience, tested with purpose. Curated tools, soils, care essentials and handmade goods for trees worth keeping.

“Good bonsai care begins with the right tools, the right materials, and the patience to use them well.”

The supply room of the yard

Stocked by use, not by trend.

The Barn is Old Tree Yard’s curated supply space — the shelf where the things that actually work live. The soils we pot with, the tools that have earned their hooks on the wall, and the small bench items that quietly make careful work easier. It exists so bonsai owners can get reliable, practical items without guesswork.

Wesley selects every item on care value: does it keep a tree healthier, make a cut cleaner, or remove a piece of uncertainty? If it does, it earns a place. If it doesn’t, it stays off the shelf — no matter what the trend says.

Soil components

Roots first. Always.

Most bonsai problems begin below the surface. These four components are the honest building blocks of nearly every mix we use at the yard.

“Most problems I see start in the soil. Get the mix right and half your work disappears.” — Wesley

Soil mixes & ratios

Three mixes, measured honestly.

Blended at the yard in small batches, by volume, from the components above. The ratio bars show exactly what goes in — no secrets, no filler.

Wiring & styling

Shape is written in millimetres.

One wire, six gauges. Match the gauge to the branch — roughly a third of the branch’s thickness — and the tree does the rest over a season.

Cutting & pruning tools

A clean cut is a kindness.

Trees don’t heal; they seal. Every tool here exists to make wounds smaller, cleaner and quicker to close.

“The tree doesn’t care what the tool cost. It cares that the cut was clean.” — Wesley

Fertiliser & health

Feed steadily. Watch closely.

Bonsai live in a handful of soil — what you feed them is most of what they get. Three honest options cover nearly every situation at the yard.

Potting accessories & bench tools

Small things that make careful work easy.

None of these are glamorous. All of them are the difference between a tidy repot and a long afternoon of muttering.

“Buy fewer things, but buy the ones you’ll still be using in ten years.” — Wesley

Starter kits

Begin properly, without overbuying.

Two ways to start that skip the paralysis. Everything in a kit is something we’d sell on its own — bundled, it just costs less thinking.

Handmade by the yard

Hand-built pieces for displaying trees with dignity.

Built by Tyron in the farm workshop — local hardwoods, hand-cut joinery, oil-and-wax finishes that renew for decades. No two pieces identical, no piece rushed. Commissioned one at a time, sized to the tree it will carry.

Wesley’s Notes

Chosen through real care, not catalogues.

Every item in the Barn carries a note from Wesley because every item has actually been through his hands. Nothing is listed off a spec sheet. The notes are short on purpose — if a product needs a paragraph of persuasion, it doesn’t belong here.

“The right tools and materials don’t replace patience, but they do make good bonsai care far easier. I’d rather recommend fewer things that truly work than sell people things they don’t need.” — Wesley, bonsai specialist · Old Tree Yard

Request a sourced item

Can’t find it? We’ll go looking.

The Barn is young and the shelves are still filling. If you need something we don’t list — a specific tool, a pot size, an odd soil component — tell us what you’re after and we’ll source it through suppliers we already trust.

No newsletters, no list. Your request goes straight to the bench.

Supplier transparency

Where things come from, said plainly.

Right now, most items are sourced on request: you ask, we order through suppliers we already use ourselves, and you collect at the yard or we courier locally. Soil mixes and handmade pieces come from the yard itself.

As supplier partnerships are confirmed, each product card will name its source right here. If a link ever earns the yard a commission, it will say so in plain words next to the link. No hidden margins, no mystery stock.

All prices are indicative ranges in South African rand, confirmed when you request an item.
